Selling Artwork

From 2002 to 2004 I focused on selling my artwork. I tried to sell my abstract collages on canvas, but that didn't work since I lived in an area where sailboat painters were more "acceptable". Someone suggested I do my collages on vases to create functional pieces that would sell. So I invented a process for painting with paper and heavy duty white glue. I used 3 to 4 types of paper/colors for each vase and wove strips of paper together using the glue to create textured colorful decorative artwork. Some vases even got embellished with found objects. When the piece was complete, I sealed it with waterproof, windproof and fadeproof polyurethane [ made for sailboat decks :)]. My vases were decorative and functional; the owner could rinse them out if they used them for flowers. It worked! My artwork - products sold. All the vases pictured here sold and now add beautiful home decor for their owners to enjoy.

While I loved my vases, all of my time was spent creating to sell. My creative juices were sucked into selling. I actually spent more time in packing and preparing for shows that showed little revenue then in my studio creating. I was burning out.

It was time to get in touch with my artist and decide what was best for her. She just wanted to create to create. With no strings attached, no selling limitations related to shows, shops or groups. When I get enough pieces together I will consider doing a show. Its now 2008 and I have been creating to create. I have also rediscoverd that my real dream is to help others heal through the creative process. So today I get into my studio to create and I am on a journey to fulfill my dream. Beginnings

Wow, this is my first blog post after I entered in a poem I wrote years ago about my art studio. But that seemed safe, since it was already written. I have been thinking about blogging for some time, but wasn't sure how safe I felt putting my words out there. I bought the summer 2008 copy of Artful Blogging. As I flipped through the magazine, there was a wonderful article about a new friend I met at an art event, Sherill Anne Gross, www.sagworks.wordpress.com. The creativity flowed through the magazine and I was ready to blog.

I would like to use my blog to explore my creative process and the healing I receive from creating. I invite you to share your creative/healing process also. I would also like to use it to practice writing about art and the healing process, as I have started writing a book on creative heaing.

Now my biggest challenge is to take and get pictures of my artwork up on my blog without getting all caught up in my head with the details of doing it - good luck she said.
